Now that you have a good understanding of what papain is, where it comes from, and what it’s used for, both in medicine and in fitness, it’s time to explore those pesky side effects that come with almost everything that we put on or in to our bodies. Side effects of papain are few and far between, most people aren’t going to be experiencing anything adverse. Unfortunately, there are a couple of minor annoyances that you need to be aware of and even more unfortunate, there are a couple of very serious side effects that can take place if you’re not careful. The “Usual” Papain Side Effects
Usual is in quotations there. All side effects of papain supplementation are rare, but the more common ones are what we’ll call the usual suspects. More annoying than anything, the usual suspects are those that fewer than 1 in 100 users may experience. In no particular order:
- Stinging or burning – Though mild, if ointment or lotions made with papain are applied to the skin, it’s possible to experience some stinging or burning sensation, resulting in minor rash. The stinging or burning can happen because your skin is extremely sensitive or because you’re having some sort of allergic reaction. I think it’s safe to say that you know you should stop applying the substance causing the discomfort so the side effect can subside on its own.
- Nausea – Even more rare, nausea is reported by a handful of consumers. These consumers typically are already very sensitive to foreign supplementation. Those who aren’t might be experiencing some uncomfortable upset stomach feeling because of a reaction the papain is having with something they recently consumed. Remember, papain is used to treat heartburn and indigestion.
The Heavy Hitters: Side Effects of Papain to Beware of
These are the side effects you really need to be aware of. If you’re supplementing with papain, make sure that your doctor is aware when you go in to be treated for any ailment.
- Bleeding Disorders – Some users have experienced such an increase in blood pressure reduction and blood thinning that it’s led to unintended bleeding disorders. The clotting problems can usually be solved by flushing the system and removing the papain over time. In some, the most severe of scenarios, iron deficiency can become a more permanent problem.
- Birth defects – Pregnant women should avoid papain supplementation at all costs. There is no reason to put your child at risk and something about the amino acids in papain can cause unhealth genetic problems for unborn children. Simply avoiding supplementation until after giving birth is the best fix to this problem but it’s something that must be mentioned.
It isn’t all doom and gloom. Most people will not see any negative effects at all after consuming papain. Consider speaking with your doctor if you’re really concerned but so long as you follow suggested dosage amounts and dosing techniques as prescribed, it’s truly very unlikely you experience any adverse effects at all!
