Chances are you’ve heard of CoQ10 somewhere, whether it is in a commercial, an article, or at your doctor’s office. Formally known as coenzyme Q10, CoQ10 is present in every cell of your body. It is involved in the generation of ATP (cellular energy) and serves as a natural antioxidant. Given its many uses, there have been many studies done attributing to its essential, health-benefiting nature. Unfortunately, production of CoQ10 drops as our bodies age and older individuals become deficient. For people with a well-balanced diet, CoQ10 comes through food, but others may need to take a supplement to get enough. Regardless of how you receive your CoQ10, this super-enzyme has many benefits in our body. Read on to find out more about how it can go to work for you:

A Spotlight on Antioxidants

In our bodies, there are naturally occurring atoms with an extra, unpaired electron that arise from reactions with oxygen. The naturally occurring atoms with the extra, unpaired electron are known as free radicals and are incredibly harmful to the delicate balance of our bodies. However, a variety of substances work to eliminate these free radicals from our system. These substances are called antioxidants because they keep cells safe from oxidative damage. This is important because free radicals can cause a number of health problems such as: cardiovascular disease, cataracts, and even cancer.

Benefits of CoQ10

  1. May help treat patients with heart failure

Multiple studies have shown over time that treatment with CoQ10 can help reduce further damage and may help patients with heart failure diagnosis improve heart functioning. For this reason, it is often included in other heart health medications as a supplement. Studies show that treatment with CoQ10 may also increase energy, a problem for patients with chronic heart failure.

  1. Can help patients with diabetes

For patients with diabetes, it can seem like controlling their condition is a never-ending cycle. Although CoQ10 is not a cure for the disease, it has been shown to help the body’s cells increase sensitivity to insulin and therefore lower blood sugar. In fact, studies show that diabetics receiving CoQ10 supplements over a period had significantly reduced blood glucose and hemoglobin A1C levels.

  1. Helpful for brain function

As our natural cellular energy manufacturers, mitochondria, begin to fail with age, it can lead to the death of some brain cells. When this becomes severe, it leads to diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Since the brain is particularly vulnerable to free radicals and their damaging effects, CoQ10 steps in to help protect it. By helping to protect it from oxidative damage, the brain can stay healthier. Even for patients already diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, treatment with CoQ10 may help slow progression of the disease.

All in All

CoQ10 is a vital compound in our bodies and helps with many, many more things than can be described here. Its protective and energizing properties make it invaluable as we age and production decreases naturally. Being sure to get enough whether it is by diet or supplement, don’t miss out on the health benefits that CoQ10 provides
